Why the hell did they cancel angel? It was brilliant and season 5 was one of the best.

Wow..great post.

WOW! I couldn’t have said that better myself! Very enjoyable. WB is putrid, yes we know.

Sunday 20 June 2004, by mememe :

Why do you sound surprised? They would rather fill the time slot with their own crap, or a cheap reality show. The execs are only interested in the next season’s profits, rather that cultivate a successfull show (sit-coms appear to be the expections)

if you ask me after dawsons & buffy left angel was the only thing left to hold up WB ratings. now its gone-no one is watching WB as much as before. i know im not.

Ever think that David Boreanaz wanted out? I mean, he seemed quite prepared for the show to end quicker than all the others, and didn’t seem nearly as emotional to see it go.

The others are all absolutely ready to jump onto the TV movie bandwagon, but he wouldn’t do it "unless they raise the bar higher."

My theory is that DB went to the WB, not Joss, and asked them to not renew his contract. They didn’t, and he’s out. And look at what he’s getting already.

I can’t stop smiling right now. I mean, this makes me feel kinda bad cause we lost it but....the WB is getting what’s comming back to them. They hurt so many people, and now the hurt is comming back to bite their network in the ass. Personally, I can’t wait till there’s nothing left but crumbs.

I don’t know why it surprised me, it shouldn’t have considering the source. I’ve known all along where WB’s brain is after Angel’s cancellation, but now it’s proven. However, even knowing that, these stats truly surprised me!! And made me mad all over again - keep up the good work reviewer/writers/etc. I wanna stay mad at those dunces at WB! If it’s not a repeat of Angel or Buffy, I don’t watch anything on the WB anymore. Reports such as this just keeps my resolve fresh. Thanks.

The really funny thing about this article is that the author mentions the use of a storyline featuring Nazis as a sign that Enterprise is on the ropes. Of course, as we all know, the Angel writers are waaayyyy too brilliant, innovative and original to ever, ever stoop to such tactics as episodes featuring Nazis. (Not to mention gimmicks like puppets and Mexican wrestlers.) Oh, wait a minute. They aren’t.

Well, for the president of The WB to resign, you know something was going on over there and there’s more to this than we know.

I want to kill the WB.

WB SUCKERS!!!

Monday 21 June 2004, by Anonymous :

TheWB is a cheap crappy second rate network, they will never be as big as NBC or CBS, given the same situation, there is no way NBC would cancel Angel, Not while it was making big gains like that. Thewb is lacking leadership at the top.

And all that in the USA alone. I’m in Australia and there is a hugh fan base here for Angel and Buffy and that is with NO advertising for the shows. That’s right. These shows are advertised for a few hours prior to their screening (11.30pm) and they still manage to pull the fans in. Add to that the fact that we seem to recieve our DVD releases earlier(Season 4 Angel and 7 Buffy just released)it seems to me that the WB just ignores the shows oversea’s fans.

Tuesday 22 June 2004, by Anonymous :

*sigh* this just proves what we already knew, WB is full of.... use your imagination and finish that sentence. Frankly I don’t care anymore, I’m not watching TV. What’s the point when there’s only reality TV and OC fluff all over.

Tuesday 22 June 2004, by Wolverine68 :

The WB is a 2nd rate network?

It’s more like a 5th rate network!

This is so sickening. They just have some gripe against Whedon, I think. (Perhaps they are on a mission to ruin quality TV.)

This does make the cancellation seem even wierder than it already was.

First thought. The guy who canceled Angel resigned. If only hed gotten out a few months earlier... Unless, obviously he planned on quitting. Perhaps he was just as pissed at the WB as a lot of people are and wanted to take thier main show with him on his way out the door. Lets just say hes a bastard either way.

Second idea. Someones already mentioned it in this thread and part of me is wanting to agree with them. I think David was ready to move on. Months before the cancellation was announced David said in an interview that he was "itching to try new roles". Cant really blame the guy, hed been playing the same character for eight years.

Just a few thoughts on possibilities that maybe the WB isnt fully to blame here. Whoever made the decision it still sucks. :(

those WB bastards!!

Sunday 27 June 2004, by Anonymous :

I always thought I could trust the fact that TV stations really only care about ratings and money. Up until Angel got canceled I was SURE that was all they cared about. Now I dont know what to think.

Looking at the same chart (June 18th Entertainment Weekly), there’s something else about the stats that jumps out immediately.

Among all the shows on the WB, besides the overall ratings, which shows Angel tied for sixth place among the WB’s 22 shows, it also gives the ranking for the ratings for the 18-49 age group, which is what advertisers will pay the most for. Now, the WB claims that it sells to the 12-34 age group, but good 18-49 ratings are nothing to be sneezed at. It’s like mining for garnets and finding diamonds instead. They wouldn’t sell as many ads for Clearasil, but more for Lexus.

And what was Angel’s 18-49 ranking amongst WB shows?

Tied for second.

18-49 Ranking / Show

108 Smallville

112 Angel; 7th Heaven; Charmed [tie]

118 The Surreal Life

121 Gilmore Girls

121 Superstar USA (Tues.)

129 Everwood

133 Tarzan

133 High School Reunion

138 Reba; Superstar USA (Mon.) [tie]

142 One Tree Hill

147 Steve Harvey’s Big Time; Grounded For Life [tie]

150 Jamie Kennedy; All About The Andersons [tie]

152 Like Family; What I Like About You; Smallville: Beginnings; The Help [tie]

161 Run of the House

And all of the following shows on other networks had 18-49 ranking at or below that of Angel:

18-49 Ranking / Show

112 Star Search [CBS]; Cracking Up [Fox]; WWE Smackdown [UPN]

118 The District [CBS]; Tru Calling [Fox]

121 The D.A. [ABC]; Monk [ABC]; Boston Public [Fox]; Wanda At Large [Fox]; Playing It Straight [Fox]; Forever Eden (Thurs.) [Fox]

129 Threat Matrix [ABC]; Hack [CBS]; Girlfriends [UPN]

133 L.A. Dragnet [ABC]; Eve [UPN]; Half and Half [UPN]

138 Luis [Fox]; Wonderfalls [Fox]

142 All of Us [UPN]; The Parkers [UPN]

145 Enterprise [UPN]

146 Forever Eden (Fri) [Fox]

147 One On One [UPN]

152 I’m Still Alive [UPN]; Rock Me Baby [UPN]

158 Jake 2.0 [UPN]; UPN’s Movie Friday [UPN]; The Mullets [UPN]

162 Game Over [UPN]

And the claim that Angel was cancelled because of low ratings for repeats seems in contradiction with their new policy of phasing out repeats for nearly all shows this summer. It seems to me that the decision to cancel the show had been made long before the season even started, and had nothing to do with ratings or money and everything to do with studio politics and lingering fallout over Buffy’s move to UPN. It’s the only thing that makes sense, given the good numbers this year in the most difficult time slot (vs. The O.C. & American Idol, West Wing, The Bachelor, and King of Queens & Becker). How well do they think One Tree Hill would have done against The O.C.?
