Saturday 18 September 2004, by Anonymous : For a series billed an alternate universe, it is disappointing to see the story brought back to the original universe. That works fine for a single episode like The Wish or a short story, but it is a disappointment for an entire trilogy to to do. In any case, if that wasn’t your decision and if you didn’t have a chance to correct the spelling mistakes (btw, thanks for some information on the reasons behind the poor proofreading of many modern novels), why take umbrage at the complaints about it? However, I agree with you that Amazon should let authors respond. However, your final argument about true fans ironically is at the same level of the careless, thoughtless comments that you complain about and shows a level of the irrational cliqueism that permeates many Buffy forums but that I’m surprised to see from a professional. Saturday 18 September 2004, by Anonymous : As a Buffy fan, I almost feel the need to apologize for the idiocy and self-centered ignorance of the reviews ahead of mine. Thanks for posting this. I realize it’s the result of much frustration and sore feelings, but I’m still glad you took the time to type this out; I had no idea the books were produced on such a short timeline. You know, some people are just stupid and mean, when it comes right down to it. There are ways to leave an unfavorable review of a book without being a jackass, and it’s a shame that more people don’t take the time to leave favorable reviews of books they’ve enjoyed. (Something I’m going to make a point of taking the time to do myself; it hadn’t ever occurred to me that people other than potential buyers might be paying attention to them.) K. Sunday 19 September 2004, by db : Hmm, let’s see. The Buffy books are marketed to teens, and are only found in bookstores in the children’s section, on the "Young Adult" shelf. And now the author’s complaining that the reviews on Amazon sound like they were written by teenagers. Uhhhh... well, yeah. What does she expect? But it doesn’t make a difference whether the things that make the Dark Willow trilogy so bad were the fault of the author, editors, Fox, or anyone else. A badly-written book is a badly-written book, no matter whose fault it is, and reviews will reflect that. Knowing that the glaring plot holes, wasted characters, bad pacing, awkward writing and bad characterizations aren’t really the author’s fault doesn’t make those problems magically go away. Monday 20 September 2004, by Jessica : As a teenage girl whose pet peeves includes people who can’t properly spell, and use internet slang, it’s very annoying when adults clump all teenagers into that stereotype. There are actual intelligent teenagers out there, you know. And most of us have better things to do with our time then defend writers in amazon.com reviews, which I never read and never take seriously. Honestly the main problem she seems to have is that she just can’t imagine other people not liking her work. What’s the big deal? People have different preferences, she should be able to understand that. And she does get nice reviews and letters from fans so she should just learn to take the good and the bad. The points she makes in her little rant don’t even make sense. If her plot and storylines are given to her by her editors, then why should she be so offended that readers don’t like them? And if the spelling mistakes are not her fault like she says then she shouldn’t be offended by that either. Honestly, there are worser reviews on amazon.com. At least there were none that attack her personally, like I’ve seen in numerous music reviews. That said I’ve actually read one of her novels and I didn’t like it. I didn’t even care enough to write a negative review of it on amazon. I think her work is very amateurish (a vampire villian who used to be a slayer when she was human? Can you say cliched?) and I think you could find way better fan fiction. The thing is, the people who write fan fiction are just that, fans, and they write because they love the show, whereas the people who write these books are just doing it for a paycheck. There are writers who are fans, don’t get me wrong, but it just seems there’s a lot of them who don’t even watch the show enough to even get the characterization right. There’s hundreds of times when I’ve read a Buffy novel, and rolled my eyes, because Willow, or whatever character, wouldn’t say anything like that. Tuesday 21 September 2004, by Brittney : I’m sorry that some of the buffy fans are so mean, and i think that it is rude of them to tell you to stop complaining about it, but you just have to know that not everyone hates the books. If they were real Buffy Fans they would look at Buffy at every angle and just enjoy the great idea the Buffyverse is. If they only look at it one way they will never fully apreciate or understand what could happen in Buffy. These comments are an anwser to this article : Buffy Books and Amazon.com Reviews
