Just have to say something to anyone reading this review. I live in Odessa, Texas and was a junior at Permian High School during the 1988 (not 1987) year. I wish reviewers would stop using adjectives like "monomaniacal" to describe the people of Odessa. Not everyone in this town centers their life around football. Despite how the movie portrays us, we are literate people. There is a university and a junior college here, two playhouses, a symphony, a medical school, a hospital nationally recognized for it’s advances in cardiovascular medicine, and numerous volunteer and civic organizations. We’re by no means "a small town" though you can’t tell it by the movie. Not only are we not the only high school in town, but also we weren’t even the first. The character Christian Kane plays is what we call a "good ol’ boy." We do have our share, but not everyone here who follows the team worships the players as if they are gods. Despite the tunnel vision of the movie (and apparently of the reviewers who seem to believe everything they see on screen is fact), I am proud of the movie and that Berg managed to capture the spirit of the guys who played on that team.
