NBC Picks Up Community, Parks and Recreation

NBC has picked up the comedies "Community" (Thursdays, 8-8:30 p.m. ET) and "Parks and Recreation" (Thursdays, 8:30-9 p.m. ET) — as well as the new drama "Mercy" (Wednesdays, 8-9 p.m. ET) — for the rest of the season by adding nine additional episodes to each, it was announced today by Angela Bromstad, President, Primetime Entertainment, NBC and Universal Media Studios.

"We are very pleased with the critical and audience reaction to our wonderful new comedy 'Community,'" said Bromstad. "The cast and producers are delivering a first-rate, quality show that is very promising as the newest of NBC's first-rate Thursday-night comedies."

About "Mercy," Bromstad added : "This drama has found a dedicated audience and continues to build in the ratings. We've seen future episodes and we're confident 'Mercy' can be a strong player for us." She continued, 'Parks and Recreation' has proven to be a steady performer for us on Thursday nights and gets better with every show. We look forward to continuing our creative collaboration with Amy Poehler, Greg Daniels, Michael Schur, and the rest of the great cast and production team."

"Community" comes from Dan Harmon ("The Sarah Silverman Program") and Emmy Award winners Joe and Anthony Russo ("Arrested Development"). The smart comedy series concerns a band of misfits who attend Greendale Community College. At the center of the group is Jeff Winger (Joel McHale, "The Soup"), a fast-talkin' lawyer whose degree has been revoked. With some help from his fellow classmates, Winger forms a study group who eventually learn more about themselves than their course work.

Also among the series stars who comprise the group are : Chevy Chase ("Chuck") as Pierce, a man whose life experience has brought him infinite wisdom ; Gillian Jacobs ("The Book of Daniel") as Britta, the 28-year-old dropout with something to prove ; Yvette Nicole Brown ("Rules of Engagement") as Shirley, a sassy middle-aged divorcee ; Danny Pudi ("Greek") as Abed, a pop-culture junkie ; Alison Brie ("Mad Men") as Annie, a high-strung perfectionist ; Donald Glover ("30 Rock") as Troy, a former high school football star trying to find his way and Ken Jeong ("The Hangover") as Spanish professor, Senor Chang.

"Community" is a Krasnoff Foster Entertainment, Harmonious Claptrap, Russo Brothers production, Universal Media Studios production in association with Sony Pictures Television. Russ Krasnoff ("The Soloist"), Dan Harmon ("The Sarah Silverman Program"), Joe Russo ("Arrested Development"), Anthony Russo ("Arrested Development"), Garrett Donovan ("Scrubs"), Neil Goldman ("Scrubs") and Gary Foster ("The Soloist") serve as executive producers.

"Mercy" is from creator/executive producer Liz Heldens (NBC's "Friday Night Lights"), executive producers Gretchen Berg & Aaron Harberts ("Pushing Daisies") and Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun. The new medical drama concerns the lives of the people who work at Mercy Hospital seen through the eyes of those who know it best - its nurses.

Nurse Veronica Callahan (Taylor Schilling, "Dark Matter") is an Iraqi war veteran who has just returned to Mercy Hospital and joins with fellow nurses Sonia Jimenez (Jaime Lee Kirchner, "Rent" on Broadway) and Chloe Payne (Michelle Trachtenberg, "Gossip Girl"). The cast also includes James Tupper ("Men in Trees") as Dr. Chris Sands, a new doctor at the hospital who complicates Veronica's life, Diego Klattenhoff ("Supernatural") as Mike Callahan, Veronica's estranged husband, Guillermo Diaz ("Weeds") as Nurse Angel Lopez and James Le Gros ("Ally McBeal") as Dr. Harris.

"Mercy" is a production from BermanBraun and Universal Media Studios.

"Parks and Recreation," from Emmy Award-winning executive producers Greg Daniels (NBC's "The Office," "King of the Hill") and Michael Schur (NBC's "The Office," "Saturday Night Live"), is a mockumentary that looks at the exciting world of local government. The documentary cameras follow Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler, NBC's "Saturday Night Live," "Baby Mama") an ambitious, upbeat and mid-level bureaucrat in the Parks and Recreation Department of Pawnee, Indiana.

Also starring are : (Rashida Jones, NBC's "The Office") as a local nurse ; Aziz Ansari ("Human Giant," "Scrubs") as Lesley's colleague ; Nick Offerman ("Children's Hospital") plays Lesley's boss ; Paul Schneider ("The Family Stone") is the city planner ; Aubrey Plaza ("Mayne Street") is Lesley's uninterested college intern ; Chris Pratt ("The O.C.," "Everwood") portrays a loser ex-boyfriend.

It's interesting for me to play someone who is such the opposite from myself because it's more challenging to keep that realistic. Maura Tierney's Illness Prompts NBC to Shuffle Fall Schedule ; Repercussions for Gossip Girl ?

The start of production on NBC's Parenthood, which was to premiere this fall, has been postponed for eight weeks "due to a medical evaluation that valued cast member Maura Tierney is undergoing," the network says in a statement.

"The top priority for NBC, Universal Media Studios and Imagine Television is the well-being of Ms. Tierney," the statement said. "We are unable to release further details, and ask that you respect her privacy at this time."

As a result of the production delay, Parenthood will now premiere at midseason.

To fill the fall void, NBC has summoned to work the cast and crew of the medical drama Mercy, which wasn't scheduled to debut until midseason. Mercy will now premiere in the fall, though it's unclear if it will occupy Parenthood's Wednesdays-at-8 slot.

With Mercy starting production months ahead of schedule, there is the question of whether one of that series' leads, Michelle Trachtenberg, now might not be available for a planned limited run on Gossip Girl.

While neither the CW nor Trachtenberg's rep immediately responded to TVGuide.com's requests for comment, production sources tell TVGuide.com that at this time, no scheduling conflict is foreseen.

As you might know, Kevin Smith's next project is the film A Couple of Dicks, over at Warner Brothers. The last news we heard from the project was that WB — the studio that, inarguably, has the biggest balls on the block— decided to keep the original title rather than dumb it down. Now we have some real news in the form of additional cast members.

First up is Michelle I-could-talk-more-about-this-woman-had-I-ever-watched-Buffy Trachtenberg, who will be playing the daughter of Bruce Willis' character. Her step-father will be portrayed by the other new player, Jason Holy-Shit-His-Next-Film-Is-Alvin-And-The-Chipmunks-The-Goddamn-SQUEAKQUEL* Lee.

Who knows how Smith will be able to handle directing material that isn't his own, but I have no doubt that he can coax the funny out of this cast— Smith has real gold to work with. I'm especially excited to see a film coming from Tracy Morgan that doesn't have him slumming his vocal noise in a CGI-rodent fest.

Adam Brody and Seann William Scott are also set to appear in the Mark-&-Rob-Cullen-scripted comedy, "about two cops whose adventures include locating a stolen baseball card, rescuing a woman, and dealing with gangsters and their laundered money." Release date is currently set for February 26th, 2010.**

Did Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and Michelle Trachtenberg practically throw down over Pete Wentz at a star-studded Hollywood soiree ?

Don't believe the hype—or, in this case, the Perez Hilton dramarama version.

Yes, the girls were seated in the same VIP section at Monday's DJ Hero event, where Eminem and Jay-Z performed. In fact, a source tells E ! News, the two had been chatting cordially earlier in the evening.

Then, per our partygoing pal, Ash "definitely had one drink too many."

But while Perez says that a tipsy Ashlee ended up verbally attacking Michelle (accompanied by a new beau) about her dating Pete Wentz, we've learned things weren't that serious.

As Ashlee's rep spins it...

"It was just a misunderstanding," the publicist tells us. "Ashlee has since apologized to Michelle, and they remain on good terms."

Michelle's and Pete's reps couldn't be reached for comment on the incident.

How did Michelle Trachtenberg feel when she heard pal Sarah Michelle Gellar was expecting ? "I was jumping for joy," said the actress, who played Gellar's little sister on the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

"We talk every other day. I'm super excited !" she added at a private dinner for designer Rebecca Minkoff and stylist Ilaria Urbnati's at L.A. boutique Confederacy last week. "I'm so very happy for her and Freddie. She's going to be an extraordinary mom. Good people make great parents."

This will be the first child for Gellar, 31, and Freddie Prinze Jr., 33, who have been married for six years. Trachtenberg says she can see the key to their longevity : "It's in the Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner or Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin vein – they really don't talk about their relationship. They keep their private, personal love life to themselves. That's what makes it so special."

Trachtenberg takes her own close-lipped advice when talking about her recurring role as Georgina on Gossip Girl, but assures that next week's episode, airing Monday on the CW, will "definitely have a sweet, fantastic cliffhanger" that will reveal if Georgina's resurfacing evil is here to stay. Trachtenberg will also star in NBC's upcoming nurse drama Mercy.

New Line/Warner Bros.' 17 Again took over the box office with an estimated $24.1 million from 3,255 theaters. Starring Zac Efron, Leslie Mann, Thomas Lennon, Michelle Trachtenberg and Matthew Perry, the comedy averaged $7,393 per location. In the film, Efron and Perry play a middle-aged loser whose marriage has fallen apart and whose kids don't respect him, and he's been wondering if he made the right decision by marrying his then girlfriend Scarlett (Mann) right out of school. After being forced to crash with his high school friend Ned (Lennon), Mike is magically transformed back to the age of 17 and gets to go back to high school and make different decisions the second time around.

Universal Pictures' new thriller State of Play, starring Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright Penn, Jason Bateman, Jeff Daniels and Helen Mirren, opened in second place with $14.1 million from 2,803 theaters. Directed by Kevin Macdonald, the movie averaged $5,030 per site and was made for about $60 million.

DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens held on to the third spot, making another $12.9 milion in its fourth weekend for a total of $162.7 million. Produced for $175 million, the 3D animated film is the biggest movie of the year so far.

Following closely in fourth was Hannah Montana The Movie, which added $12.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its total to $56.1 million.

Universal's Fast & Furious rounded out the top five with $12.3 million. Made for about $85 million, the fourth film in the franchise has earned $136.7 million after three weeks.

Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor's sequel Crank : High Voltage, starring Jason Statham, opened to $6.5 million in 2,223 theaters. The first film debuted with $10.5 million in 2006 and ended up with $28 million.

Warner Bros. Pictures' Observe and Report dropped 63.2% in its second weekend to make $4.1 million for a total of $18.7 million, while Dragonball : Evolution dropped an even bigger 66.9% its second weekend. The latter earned just $1.6 million for a total of $7.8 million.
