It's like TV-geek heaven today : Hours after the return date for "Lost" was announced, NBC has set a debut for the third season of "Chuck."

The show will kick off its third season on Sunday, Jan. 10 with back-to-back episodes before moving to its regular home at 8 p.m. ET Monday, Jan. 11.

NBC also says that "Heroes" will air a two-hour episode on Jan. 4, then slide back to 9 p.m. Mondays the following week. The moves boot "Trauma" off of Monday nights, and although there were reports Wednesday that the network was reconsidering its decision not to pick up the show, there's not much room on the schedule for it to go. The cutback of "Day One's" order will open up some space in the spring, but that's about it.

As for "Chuck," NBC is hoping the Sunday launch — a day after NBC airs an NFL playoff doubleheader during which it will no doubt be massively promoted — will expand the show's audience beyond the devoted cult it has now (the series averaged 7.36 million viewers last season). The Jan. 10-11 premiere will also give it a week on the air before "24" begins its new season on FOX.

In addition the already impressive array of guest stars lined up for this season — Brandon Routh, Angie Harmon, Robert Patrick, Armand Assante, Angie Harmon, Kristin Kreuk, Vinnie Jones and Robert Patrick — NBC also says former WWE champion "Stone Cold" Steve Austin will guest-star as a character named Hugo Panzer, who gets caught up in Chuck's (Zachary Levi) first solo mission.

NBC has ordered 19 episodes of "Chuck" this season. The Jan. 10 premiere date will give the show seven episodes (the premiere counts as two) on the air before the network's Winter Olympics coverage bumps it for two weeks in February. Assuming everything goes as planned, it would return on March 1 and run through mid-May.

My dream Chuck scenario is starting to take shape !

Sources confirm that NBC has ordered six additional episodes of Chuck. That's on top of the 13 eps the network previously ordered, bringing the show's season 3 total to 19 (just three shy of what's considered a full season).

The news — first reported by The Wrap's Joe Adalian — follows my earlier scoop that NBC is considering bringing Chuck back before March.

And now we're on to NBC's official announcements. What a busy day !

* Chuck is officially coming back, thanks to the largesse of sponsor Subway. Chuck will air Mondays at 8 p.m. beginning in February, after the Olympics.

* Heroes will take the Monday 8 p.m. time slot in the fall, new paramedic show Trauma will follow at 9 p.m.

* My Name Is Earl star Ethan Suplee just tweeted : "Just got the call that My Name Is Earl has been canceled. They sure did take their time with that decision or rather informing us of it." Theoretically it could still go to another network, but it's leaving NBC for sure.

* Law & Order has been renewed for season 20. Law & Order and Southland will share Friday nights at 8 and 9 p.m. respectively. (Eek !) This Jay Leno mishagas makes TV all strange and unnatural.

* Joel McHale's Community will air at 9:30 on Thursdays after The Office.

* Parenthood will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the fall, and then cede that slot to Mercy at midseason. New show Day One will air Mondays at 9 p.m. beginning in February. 100 Questions launches midseason at 9:30 on Tuesdays.

NBC renews 'Chuck' !

Chuck tux In the battle of Chuck vs. the Network Suits, the Buy More geek has prevailed.

NBC has decided to give Josh Schwartz's well-liked action-comedy another shot next fall.

The network picked up 13 episodes of the series from Warner Bros., which, in a business-side trend this year, made some budget concessions to secure the show a third season.

Fans pushed NBC very hard for a pickup, launching a "Save Chuck" campaign that included buying sandwiches at series sponsor Subway.

Chuck joins Southland, Heroes, L&O : SVU, Friday Night Lights and Parks & Recreation among shows NBC has renewed for fall. Given that 10 p.m. will be off the board due to Jay Leno's talk show, the network has considerably fewer slots than usual to fill.

Confidence has been pretty high that Chuck would return. Once Fox found a way to make the much lesser-rated Dollhouse work for fall late last week, Chuck returning to NBC seemed almost certain. It also probably hasn't hurt that star Zachary Levi has been a team player for NBC, appearing in the network's PSA campaigns, marketing promotions and events.

Here's Chuck's 18-49 ratings for the season, with the final number having gone up a tenth in the nationals since this chart was created. As you can see, for all the woes about the show's ratings, it actually performed fairly steady, dropping only slightly in midseason.

Fans don't want NBC to chuck Chuck.

The spy series was the top pick among 21 "on the bubble" between renewal and cancellation in USA TODAY's 12th annual Save Our Shows poll ; 54% favored a third season.

CBS' Cold Case and Without a Trace scored second and third, typical for long-running series, with 45% and 41% of voters wanting to keep the series. But the most startling show of support came for ABC's Castle, which premiered last month to modest ratings : 39% want it back, fourth in the poll.

All told, more than 43,000 fans cast their votes during the 10-day online poll, up sharply from last year, when the strike-shortened season sparked renewals of many borderline series.

Chuck's poll popularity is consistent with previous support for genre shows. It has "everything your inner geek needs to survive," says fan Phil Rayser of Columbia, S.C. "There's just the right mix of action, comedy (and) romance."

But though Chuck has gained supporters within NBC, its return is far from certain. Despite a fan-led campaign on Twitter and at sponsor Subway sandwich shops — "it's the show that people have rallied behind this year," says executive producer Josh Schwartz — Monday's season finale got no ratings lift, scoring a modest 6 million viewers.

Some fans' picks reflect troubled times. "I especially enjoy shows like Castle and Chuck because they are lighthearted and interesting enough to take me out of my own worries," says Angie Meck of Carlisle, Pa. "I can't watch heavy dramas and sleep soundly."

ABC's Scrubs, which has a "series finale" set to air in May, is again in contention, especially if star Zach Braff agrees to return for some episodes ; a third of poll respondents want it back. But cost will have a much bigger impact on survival chances for Scrubs and My Name Is Earl, among others.

Chuck stars Zachary Levi and Adam Baldwin came up with a unique way to help the fortunes of their on-the-bubble show by taking a fan's suggestion and leading 400 convention goers to a Birmingham Subway outlet to show their leading advertiser that Chuck deserves to survive.

Falling ratings have threatened to cancel the show, which features a sales assistant whose brain is accidentally loaded with government secrets, but fan Wendy Farrington had the unique idea of getting fans to follow the money and show the sandwich franchise Subway that the show they were sponsoring had an audience. She presented the idea to Zachary Levi who plays the titular character Chuck Bartowski at Starfury conventions T1 event in Birmingham, UK. Levi and Adam Baldwin (Casey) then asked the hundreds of con attendees to follow them on en masse to the local Subway.

Levi, who described the show as “On the good side of the bubble”, even got behind the counter and helped out the besieged staff of the outlet in the Birmingham NEC exhibition centre, staying until the very last fan was served.

We were in attendance at the foody flash mob and have these pictures from other sandwich and Chuck-hungry fans.

NBC must renew Chuck. I think I've been pretty clear about this. It's not an option. NBC must renew it. Forget logic. Screw ratings. And fuck all about Jay Leno five nights a week. I've never done any of the useless standing out in front of a studio with a picket sign to save a TV show. Mostly because those displays of 20 - 30 people who should be at their jobs instead of trying to save their beloved programming simply never work...and are sort of sad actually. Letter writing is still a fairly stirring, but usually fruitless endeavor. On the other hand, some of the more inventive campaigns to save shows have been rightly aimed at sponsors of shows. They may not all work, but if you're going to take the time and energy to try to get a show renewed, do it in a smart way at least.

A buddy of mine informed me today that there's a plan this coming Monday to show support for Chuck by buying a sandwich at Subway. Further investigation has lead me right to a couple of fansites, Zachary-Levi.comi and ChuckTV.net. The former site lists six things you can do to help the show out :

1. Get the word out on this program. Lots of people want to help Chuck, but may not have the time or inclination to write letters, but the network will listen closer if we're talking dollars.

2. Still, if you can…write letters to NBC & Universal telling them why you think Chuck is great (Ben Silverman is Co-Chairman of NBC and Angela Bromstad is with Primetime Programming). In that letter be sure to mention that you're going to be supporting Subway, one of Chuck's key sponsors by purchasing a $5 Footlong the evening of the finale and that you're spreading the word to convince more fans to do the same…this is a way for non-Nielson fans to show their love of the show by directly supporting one of Chuck's key advertisers.

3. Write a thank you letter to Subway, letting them know what the fans are trying to do here and thank them for their product placement spots on Chuck.

4. Convert as many new fans as you can before the finale…we need the numbers.

5. On April 27th be sure to BUY A $5 FOOTLONG from Subway and if possible, drop a note in the comment box at the franchise letting them know you're participating in the Finale and Footlong campaign to save NBC's Chuck, of which Subway is a product placement sponsor.

6. Watch the finale LIVE if possible.

If you do nothing else…do the last two items on the list.
