Brad Meltzer loves Superman. In 2008, the New York Times best selling author led the charge to save Jerry Siegel's childhood home and he also connected the Man of Steel to the biblical tale of Cain and Abel in his most recent novel "The Book of Lies."

So it makes perfect sense that his first major comic project since his top-selling relaunch of "Justice League of America" for DC Comics would be a run on Dark Horse's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer : Season 8."

To quote Daniel 'Oz' Osbourne, "Huh ?"

Well, thanks to recent developments in the Buffyverse, and a hefty dose of magic, Miss Summers now possesses some pretty super powers. And in a situation similar to Superman's, who now lives in a world inhabited by thousands of Kryptonians, Buffy is currently fighting the good fight with an army of Slayers.

All of this makes the leap from Smallville to Sunnydale no greater than clearing a tall building in a single bound, and the leap Meltzer made to write the series for an arc was even easier.

"Joss and I started as email buds, and then he was kind enough to write the introduction for 'Identity Crisis.' But as to how I got involved, it was rather pretty simple : He asked," Meltzer told CBR News.

Meltzer's actual involvement in the literal extension of Whedon's expanded TV universe was first announced back in 2006, but it wasn't until last week, when Dark Horse solicited its comics for February 2010, that readers got their first taste of what's to come in the upcoming arc - namely, a reveal of who the "Big Bad" really is in Season 8.

Known only as Twilight, and bearing no relation to that other vampire series, the supervillain du jour is a masked man of mystery, and it's been teased that he has a history with Buffy. He'd also like nothing more than to rid the world of all magic, both good and evil, but his methods of eradication leave much to be desired.

While no stranger to the big reveal - having written seven whodunits since his debut novel, "The Tenth Justice," in 1998 - Meltzer wasn't prepared to spill too much just yet.

"If you look back at when we did 'Identity Crisis,' one of the first things I said was that I thought surprise had been gone from comics, and that it needed to come back. That's why we never teased the killer," said Meltzer. "It's why we didn't do preview copies. And it's why I wrote nearly all of the solicits myself. So, you'll just have to wait and see."

When pressed, he added, "You know when people say cliché nonsense like, 'This is what it's building to ?' Well, we mean it."

Meltzer is writing the penultimate arc of the series, which is expected to run four issues (#32-35), setting up Whedon for the grand finale. The superstar writer said that Whedon has been heavily involved in laying out his arc.

"I've been overusing ocean analogies lately, so let me stay with that theme : This is his boat. It's a big, gorgeous boat. But the best part is when you get to see him drive it," explained Meltzer. "In fact, the real reason I signed up was because of that opportunity to study and see someone I admire at work. I love seeing how people whose work I admire actually work. I can only learn and improve from that. And every single day, I want to learn and improve. So I'm thrilled that he's been so involved, rather than just tossing me the anchor."

While he was quick to gush over the mastermind of the all things Buffy, Meltzer also heaped praise on his creative partner on the arc, Eisner award winning artist Georges Jeanty.

"I'm sure every writer on 'Buffy' feels this, but I think we got his best work. Some of the moments are just so dead-on emotionally," said Meltzer. "That's all I ever look for in a comic artist. Can they pull off the emotional ?"

He then teased, "Plus, he draws the greatest geek moment I hope I've ever written."

Meltzer promised to check back with CBR News once his first issue of "Buffy the Vampire : Season 8" comes out in February, but in the meantime he's going to be working on two other books, one fiction and one non-fiction.

"I'm just finishing my first non-fiction book called, I think it'll be official soon, 'Heroes For My Son,' which will be out in May," said Meltzer. "It's a book I've been writing since the day my son was born - a collection of heroes throughout history from Jim Henson to Mr. Rogers to Rosa Parks. And I'm also working on my next novel, another thriller, which launches my first recurring character."

Buffy lives !

No, not the proposed Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie that wouldn't involve creator Joss Whedon or anyone from the beloved TV show, which all serious Bronzers consider an abomination against nature.

Rather, a series of motion-comic webisodes based on Whedon's highly successful series of "Season Eight" comics.

An actor friend of ours has clued us in to the casting of the new Buffy webisodes, which makes it sound like the proposed Web series is moving ahead quickly.

Based on the breakdown, the series will be based on the comics and feature the characters Twilight, the Big Bad of Season Eight, and evil British socialite Slayer Lady Genevieve Savidge, who plots to usurp Buffy's place in the Slayer hierarchy.

Casting director Jeff Shuter is also looking for voice actors to play the parts of familiar Buffyverse characters Faith, Kennedy and Robin Wood, as well as a bunch of new characters (including someone who sounds like actor Daniel Craig to play a character based on the James Bond star).

Now that Dollhouse is winding up, Cabin in the Woods is delayed until 2011 and there's no new Dr. Horrible on the immediate horizon, this is the best news yet for a Whedonite. Yay !

Scott Allie - "Buffy : Season 8" Comic Book - November 12, 2009 - Buffy Zone Update

So, the news is out. Buffy #30 went on sale recently, we saw a large portion of the Slayer army wiped out, and Buffy seems to be flying.

I was expecting Buffy fans to go nuts over that one. I thought fans would hate it, feel like we were making their story too “comic booky,” with a flying girl. I was relieved to find that the reaction was generally positive, but more, I was heartened that a lot of the responses I got were accepting this weird development because, now, looking back, they could see the foreshadowing that'd been laid in from the beginning—Buffy's fear of flying, that very first airborne image of her on the second page of Buffy #1. Fans have questioned a number of times if we (or Joss) really know where this is all going, and now, one of the oddest plot twists yet has revealed the planning built into Season Eight since the beginning.

In December, we release “Goddesses and Monsters,” the Willow one-shot that Joss wrote for Karl Moline. One of the biggest mysteries of Season Eight has been Willow's rise to power and her relationship with the serpent lady, Aluwyn. This one-shot won't exactly nail that mystery shut, but it gives you a lot to think about. What Karl Moline gave us was some really cool designs, reminding us that his talents are numerous and considerable. I can't wait for you to see Muffitt the steampunk waif.

Then in January, Joss and Georges are together again for “Turbulence,” in Buffy #31, in which the Slayer and a few of her friends regroup, to try to figure out what the hell just happened. That's our way of bringing readers back into focus after the major shakeup of Jane's arc, and get you ready for what Brad has in store for you — which includes : Buffy sorting out her powers ; Willow searching for the missing members of the team ; and the long-awaited unmasking of Twilight. I thought you were all gonna crap yer pants over Buffy flying, so maybe the revelation about Twilight's plans isn't gonna be as big a deal as I've been saying it will be. We'll all find out in a few months ...

In the meantime, Brad Meltzer, who'll be overseeing the next arc of Season Eight, just started a Twitter account. You can follow him @bradmeltzer, where he recently unveiled the Buffy #32 cover by Georges, a great homage to Action Comics #1. Brad is one of the hottest writers in comics, a brilliant novelist, and so far he's been blowing Joss away with nuanced, complex scripts, boldly grasping the essence of Season Eight, and really stepping up to the challenging, penultimate arc.

1. bamph : I've just read issue 30 and while I get the WTF-hype for the ending,it actually didn't cause a extreme WTF or pissed off reaction from me although I was confused by it. I suppose answers will come in January. My question isn't about this though since I know someone will be asking soon enough.

I have questions about the new issue but I've got a general season 8 question to kick things off. With season 9 already mapped out, plotwise, would you say Joss is actually telling a two season arc/storyline and would you say the end of season 8 is more along the lines of Becoming, Restless and Grave which had more cliffhanger ends to those seasons and setup for the next vs. Prophecy Girl, Graduation Day, The Gift and Chosen which had more definitive end series feels even though they weren't ?

Scott Allie : Season 8 & 9 are two totally distinct seasons, as distinct as any of them. You'll be following the same characters, for the most part, they'll be changed by these events, but believe me, we would not drag you through 40 issues for a cliffhanger. Season 8 pays off.

2. AndrewCrossett : Buffy obviously has her powers (or some powers) back, plus more... able to survive a 50-foot fall uninjured, able to fly. Would I be off base in thinking the physical contact with that goddess had something to do with it ?

Scott Allie : That'd be a fair guess, but it's gonna take them some thinking to figure this out.

3. neowhobaz : do the goddesses play an integral role in the remainder of the series what with having godlike powers and all ?

Scott Allie : Spoiler. Sorry.

4. Emmie : Can you comment on the writers' choice of Tibet as the setting - was it partially chosen for Oz's location, but also for the spiritual meaning found in Buddhism of "letting go, always letting go" of power and that by letting go, you truly find power ?

Scott Allie : Yes and yes. But Oz himself is in Tibet because he was looking for a way to turn it all off. So they're going after Oz to get help in releasing the power, and Oz himself had already gone to Tibet to get help to do just that. But yes, the location has everything to do with the theme of the story at this point. Now we're sort of stuck in Tibet ... I think Brad finds himself thinking, Really ? We're still in Tibet ?

5. Emmie : When the scene shifts to "Five Hours Later," the valley is covered in snow. Is this meant to be a natural occurrence or did the Goddesses finally leaving the valley cause this abrupt change in weather ? (I'm leaning towards the latter because of the magic changing both Buffy and the landscape around her.)

Scott Allie : I can't believe you're not mentioning the flying. Yeah, the goddesses brought the snow. Really what happened was Adam painted snow on the cover, and we thought that was cool, so we had the snow hit when the goddesses were active, and then kick up later.

6. bamph : I loved Twilight's reaction to Amy and Warren bickering. It seems Twilight's reaction to Riley being a triple agent spying on him for Buffy was played where you could read it as him knowing all along or figuring it out at that moment. Warren even asks him this before Amy and him start arguing. So is the issue intentionally being ambiguous on whether Twilight knew Riley was playing him the whole time or not because it is a question that will be answered later on ?

Scott Allie : You'll soon get answers on Twilight. But I thought it was fairly clear that Twilight knew, and wasn't commenting much.
