This spoof of romantic comedies was written by two of the six writers of "Scary Movie", Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. These two guy’s must have been the unfunny writer’s of the group. The movie’s plot is....well, truthfully, their really isn’t a plot to follow but stuff does happen. I guess that counts as a story. Basiclly, "Date Movie" focuses on helpless romantic, Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan). She falls in love with a man named Grant Funkyerdoder, and with some help from lil Hitch, she get’s his attention. Soon Julia and Grant are engaged and begin planning the wedding, but Julia’s strict father (Eddie Griffin) and Grant’s sexy ex-fiancee attempt to break the couple up. Will the love birds reach the happy ending they long for? Who cares.

Everyone knows that spoof’s are easy to make, but after watching this movie you’ll realize that it may be harder than you thought. While their are a few funny moments in "Date Movie", they are ruined by being forced to drag on for longer than they should. A joke is supposed to make you laugh, and only laugh. In "Date Movie", you laugh, then you feel weird, then you get sick, then you get mad. Their are such large gaps between the "comedy" that you will even get tired of waiting. I thought the range of emotions was supposed to be acted out by the actors not the audience.

They relied too much on making fun of other movie’s, almost every scene is just cut from another movie and pasted onto "Date Movie". It’s nothing but a mass of parodies thrown together, it doesn’t make sense, and since alot of the movie’s they spoof are already comedies (like Meet the Parents), or have nothing to do with romance (Kill Bill), every scene ends up having nothing in common with each other, thus no plot.

It doesn’t help that the actors are lousy ethier. The movie’s leads, Alyson Hannigan who plays Julia, and Adam Campbell (who?) who plays Grant, are not up to being funny. Eddie Griffin as Julia’s father, and Tony Cox as lil Hitch are both pretty good, but in a movie like "Date Movie" they can’t shine all that bright. This movie is dumb, and it rubs off on you. It is meant for people who LOVE movie’s but HATE themselves. If you actually go on a date to see "Date Movie", you probably will be broken up by the end of the movie, if you make it that far.
