From Cbc.ca. Gathering commemorates ’Dukes of Hazzard’ (With John Schneider) anniversaryWednesday 28 July 2004, by xanderbnd BRISTOL, TENNESSEE - A gathering will be held this weekend to mark the 25th anniversary of a television show about two good ol’ boys who never meant no harm. That’s right - Dukesfest is a three-day celebration of The Dukes Of Hazzard, the series about Bo and Luke Duke, who were "two modern-day Robin Hoods" in the words of the program’s theme song. The show, first broadcast in 1979 on CBS, stayed on the air until 1985. It was known for its decidedly lowbrow blend of car crashes, corn-pone humour and extremely short cut-off jeans (worn by Daisy Duke, the vivacious cousin of Bo and Luke). Dukesfest, which takes place at the Bristol Motor Speedway in East Tennessee July 31-Aug. 1, will feature bluegrass music, drag racing, an automobile stunt show and appearances by cast members from the show, like Ben Jones. ’’If you love The Dukes of Hazzard, NASCAR and country music, you’ll love this,’’ Jones, who played the mechanic Cooter on the program, told the Tennessean newspaper. ’’We’re calling it a southern Woodstock - but for families. There will be no drinking, no fighting, no shooting and no spitting on the floor.’’ ’’It’s a nice event. It will be fun, kind of like a county fair,’’ added Catherine Bach, who played Daisy. ’’The fans are fantastic. I think everybody has a good time and it’s a way for all of us to get together.’’ When The Dukes of Hazzard went off the air, Jones got into politics and served two terms in Congress from 1989 to 1993 before losing to Newt Gingrich in 1994. John Schneider, who played Bo, now plays Jonathan Kent, the father of Clark Kent, on the WB series Smallville. One of the other attractions at the weekend festival will be a world-record jump attempt by Corey Eubanks, a stunt drivers from the show. He will be behind the wheel of a restored Dodge Charger made over to look like the General Lee, the car driven by Bo and Luke. More than 650 police cars were destroyed during the run of the series in staged car crashes. |
