"The Lost Boys" Movie - Evolutionpublishing.com.au Review (joss whedon mention)

If ever there was a movie with a gay subtext, this is it. Directed by one of the biggest boys in the business, Joel Schumacher, The Lost Boys declares its hand on the poster: “Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old.” Well, ok, there’s also a bit about “never die” and “it’s fun to be a vampire” but that’s just a thin veil of disguise. The story kicks off when two teenagers move to Santa Carla, murder capital of the world. The oldest boy is seduced by a cool group of Jim Morrison fans and, when he shows classic signs of vampirism, his younger brother recruits the Frog Brothers to save him. First on their hit-list is the charismatic and likely head vampire, David. It’s all rather silly but given a sharp sense of humour, dynamic performances (brat-packer Kiefer Sutherland is magnetic), spiky pacing and real tension - Schumacher hits all his nails squarely. The results were inspirational, and enough to make any rebellious teenager with enough lust, blood or otherwise, want to sleep all day, and party all night. Did you know...

• Joss Whedon’s name has been associated with a sequel script, as yet unmade. In it, a biker-chick goes by the name of Angel; Whedon’s TV vampire was going to be a biker in the pilot show.

• Echo and the Bunnymen covered The Door’s People Are Strange for the soundtrack. It also featured INXS with Jimmy Barnes performing ‘Good Times’.

• The Frog Brothers - Edgar and Alan - were named after Edgar Allan Poe, the celebrated nineteenth century author of horror fiction.

• This film brought the ‘two Corey’s’ - Haim and Feldman - together for the first time.

• Wondering, to borrow from The Thrills, whatever happened to Corey Haim? He plays a former underground party addict in Universal Groove later this year. It is his second film in nearly a decade.
